How to use a plate calculator
Enter your target weight, select the plates available at your gym, and the calculator shows exactly which plates to load on each side of the bar. It works for both kilograms and pounds, and handles non-standard plate sets — like a home gym with only a few sizes.
Common barbell weights
These are the standard gym milestones based on a 45 lb (20 kg) Olympic barbell:
| Total weight | Bar | Per side | Plates each side |
|---|---|---|---|
| 135 lb | 45 lb | 45 lb | 1 × 45 |
| 185 lb | 45 lb | 70 lb | 1 × 45 + 1 × 25 |
| 225 lb | 45 lb | 90 lb | 2 × 45 |
| 275 lb | 45 lb | 115 lb | 2 × 45 + 1 × 25 |
| 315 lb | 45 lb | 135 lb | 3 × 45 |
| 405 lb | 45 lb | 180 lb | 4 × 45 |
What is plate math?
Plate math is the mental arithmetic lifters do between sets: subtract the bar weight, divide by two, and figure out which plates stack up to that number. A plate calculator does it instantly — and if your gym is missing a plate size, it finds the closest weight you can actually load.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a barbell weigh?
A standard Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg (45 lb). Women's Olympic bars weigh 15 kg (35 lb). Some gyms also have lighter training bars at 10 kg (22 lb). The calculator lets you set any bar weight.
How many 45 lb plates for 225?
Two 45 lb plates on each side of a 45 lb bar: 45 + (2 × 45 × 2) = 225 lb. This is the classic two-plate milestone.
What if my gym doesn't have a plate size?
Uncheck any plate you don't have. The calculator finds the closest loadable weight using only the plates you selected and shows you the difference.
Does the calculator work for kg?
Yes. Toggle between lb and kg at the top. The calculator supports both metric plates (1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 kg) and imperial plates (2.5, 5, 10, 25, 35, 45 lb).
